If your abdominal area isn’t the shape that you would like it to be, you may be researching all of your options for getting the flat and toned tummy that you want. While there are non-invasive and minimally invasive treatment options for excess fat, lax skin, and weak muscle tone, sometimes the best and most effective option is surgery.
At Chicago Aesthetic Surgery Institute (CASI) in Rosemont, IL, we specialize in helping our patients find the right treatments to fit their situation. If you are considering tummy tuck surgery, we can get you all of the information you need to make a good decision for your body.
What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that targets excess skin in the abdominal area as well as weak or separated ab muscles. The abdominal area is a common area of concern because it can be the location of stubborn fat and excess skin from pregnancy, weight loss, or genetics. During the procedure, excess skin is removed and the muscles are sutured into a stronger and more toned position.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Abdominoplasty Surgery
Abdominoplasty surgery may be right for patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their abdomen and who wish to achieve a flatter, smoother, and more shapely appearance. It can also be right for patients who struggle with weak core muscles or diastasis recti. It is commonly recommended for mothers who no longer plan on being pregnant and who are unhappy with their post-pregnancy body. It can also be a helpful surgery for patients who have had major weight loss and now struggle with excess skin on their abdomen.
The Difference Between a Full and Mini Abdominoplasty
A full abdominoplasty takes care of concerns that are present in both the upper and lower abdomen. The surgery is more extensive and often requires additional or larger incisions. A mini abdominoplasty can only address concerns on the lower abdomen, below the belly button. It is suitable for patients who have loose skin and weak abdominals in the area between the pelvis and belly button.
Everything You Need to Be Prepared for Your Tummy Tuck
Before Your Tummy Tuck
We view the consultation process as being nearly as important as the surgery itself. We want to be sure that we have fully assessed your candidacy for the surgery. We also want to make sure you have a chance to talk to us about any concerns that you have and ask any questions that will make you more comfortable with the process. We will make a plan for your surgery and show you tummy tuck before and after photos that can give you a good idea of what to expect from your results. Having clear and realistic expectations is an essential part of preparing for your tummy tuck.
During the Tummy Tuck Procedure
Every tummy tuck procedure is different because your body is unique. However, there are certain standards that you can expect from your procedure. Just before your surgery, we will mark the area where the incision will be and make additional markings to guide us during surgery. We keep the incision low so that it can be hidden under your undergarments or swimming suit. An incision will also be made to separate the belly button from the surrounding tissue.
During surgery, the incision is made from hip to hip. The incision may be smaller for a mini abdominoplasty. The skin and fat layer are lifted to give us access to the muscle layer underneath. Next, we suture the muscles together, making them tight and toned while repairing muscle separation. Hernia repair can also be done at the same time depending on the patient.
Once the abdominal muscles are repaired and tightened, the loose skin is pulled down and draped into a natural position. Then the excess is removed and the incision is closed. A new hole is made for the belly button which is stitched into place.
Recovering From Your Tummy Tuck Procedure
After surgery, you will have a drain which will help to empty the cavity of liquids as you heal. You will be given a compression garment which will need to be worn for several weeks after the surgery to reduce swelling. Everyone experiences some swelling, bruising, and soreness but you will be prescribed medication to keep you comfortable, and we will check back in with you often.
You are encouraged to gently move your body after surgery by walking, but stay away from lifting or strenuous exercise until we give you the all-clear. We will take care of you during the recovery process and you can always call if you have questions.
Combining Your Treatment With Liposuction or Other Surgeries
During a tummy tuck surgery, it is common to combine it with other procedures. Liposuction is one of the most common additions since excess fat in the abdominal area is a frequent complaint. Other additions can be a tummy tuck with a breast lift, breast augmentation, and/or liposuction, commonly called a mommy makeover, or fat grafting to other areas.
