We perform many breast lifts each year to help women gain a more youthful shape.
What Is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift surgery is a procedure that lifts the breast higher on the chest to improve the appearance of the breasts. This type of surgery may be right for patients who have sagging breasts for a variety of reasons.
A breast lift, or a mastopexy, is an outpatient procedure that takes several hours to perform. During surgery, excess skin is removed from the breast area, the nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the breasts, and the shape of the breasts is reformed.
Reasons for Getting a Breast Lift
Sagging or Drooping Breasts
Over time, breasts can begin to sag as both the skin and the tendons in the breasts stretch. This can occur because of skin laxity due to age, because of the force of gravity over many years (especially in those with larger breasts), a lack of proper support of the breasts leading to stretched tendons, or fluctuating breast size due to weight loss or pregnancy. Sagging or drooping breasts is one of the primary reasons to consider a breast lift.
Uneven Breasts
Uneven breasts may be another good reason for breast lift surgery. If one of your breasts is placed higher on your chest wall than the other, we can perform breast lift surgery on either breast to bring it up to the same level as the other or on both to improve sagging and resolve asymmetry at the same time.
Types of Breast Lift Surgery
No Implant Breast Lift
A no implant breast lift procedure will involve removing excess skin and lifting the breast without changing the size of the breasts. This type of surgery will simply change the position of the breast as well as enable us to make small adjustments to the shape of the breast.
Breast Lift With Implants
A breast lift with implants involves augmenting the size of the breasts by inserting silicone or saline implants into the breast tissue during the same procedure. This may be the right procedure for patients who are unhappy both with the placement and the size of their breasts.
Breast Reduction and Lift
Sagging can often occur when the breasts are too heavy to be adequately supported. Heavy breasts can also cause back or shoulder pain. If you wish to have a breast reduction and lift, we can remove breast tissue during your breast lift procedure to make your breasts smaller.

The Breast Lift Procedure
Consultation Process
During your breast lift surgery consultation, you will meet with us to discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure. After getting a medical history, we will examine the shape, size, symmetry, skin quality, and nipple position of your breasts to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery.
Next we will choose breast lift techniques that will fit your individual situation. We will also go over all the information you will need so that you are prepared for your surgery.
Different Techniques for Breast Lift Surgery
Choosing the right technique to treat your sagging breasts is an important part of the process. Different incisions can be used based on the degree of drooping that you have. These incisions include:
- Donut Incision: Skin is taken in a donut shape around the areola. This is most suitable for those with minor sagging and it will create a scar that is nearly invisible.
- Lollipop Incision: For moderate sagging, an incision will be made around the areola as well as vertically down the bottom of the breast. This vertical scar is visible but will fade with time. This technique allows for the removal of more skin.
- Anchor Incision: This type of incision is similar to the lollipop incision, but it adds an extra incision to the bottom crease of the breast. This type is used for the most severe forms of sagging.
Post-Operation
When your breast lift is over, you will be placed in a recovery room for a few hours until you are ready to go home. You should plan on resting for several days after your breast lift. We will have you wear a special surgical bra that will support your breasts while you recover. You will need to avoid strenuous activities for several weeks, and certain types of exercise for up to a few months after your surgery, depending on the type of surgery you have had.
