Suitable candidates for vein removal include men and women with web-like clusters of veins. During sclerotherapy, a sclerosing agent is injected into the vein, irritating it and causing it to collapse. Veins should be injected at every inch for the best results, and compression stockings should be worn during the healing period to reduce the risk of bleeding, bruising, blood clotting and discoloration.
During laser vein removal, an intense beam of light is directed at the spider vein to destroy it. Lasers are more commonly used on facial veins. Our surgeons use the Sciton Joule laser for vein removal. Sclerotherapy may be combined with laser vein removal.

Spider vein removal typically does not require any downtime, although Chicago sclerotherapy and laser vein removal patients are advised to avoid intensive activities for about 24 hours following their procedures. Treatment is not painful or invasive, and patients usually notice significant improvement in the appearance of the veins.
Sclerotherapy and laser vein removal are not generally risky procedures, but there is a slight chance of bruising, discoloration and scarring after treatment. Also, the treatment may not prevent new spider veins from developing, so future treatment may be required.
