The American Society for Plastic Surgery estimates that at least half of women have spider veins — small, web-like clusters of thin red, blue or purple veins that extend around the legs and ankles. And men are not immune from spider veins either. There are two main spider vein treatments: sclerotherapy and laser vein removal. Both procedures are offered at Chicago Aesthetic Surgery Institute and Medspa. If you would like to learn more about how to eradicate spider veins, contact our practice today to set up a consultation.
Candidates for Spider Vein Removal in Chicago
Suitable candidates for vein removal include men and women with web-like clusters of veins. Chicago spider vein removal patients should have reasonable expectations and commit to following their surgeons’ pre- and post-operative instructions. Ideal candidates should not smoke, or stop smoking prior to their procedures. Our medical staff will also examine patients’ veins to rule out more serious vein issues that might need more comprehensive treatment.

During sclerotherapy, a sclerosing agent is injected into the vein, irritating it and causing it to collapse. This prevents blood from flowing through the vein, and it also eases swelling, discoloration and discomfort. The collapsed vein will eventually fade from sight. Veins should be injected at every inch for the best results, and compression stockings should be worn during the healing period to reduce the risk of bleeding, bruising, blood clotting and discoloration.
During laser vein removal, an intense beam of light is directed at the spider vein to destroy it. Lasers are more commonly used on facial veins. Our surgeons use the Sciton Joule laser for vein removal. Sclerotherapy may be combined with laser vein removal.
A series of treatment sessions may be required for optimal outcomes.
Benefits and Risks of Spider Vein Removal
Spider vein removal typically does not require any downtime, although Chicago sclerotherapy and laser vein removal patients are advised to avoid intensive activities for about 24 hours following their procedures. Treatment is not painful or invasive, and patients usually notice significant improvement in the appearance of the veins.
Sclerotherapy and laser vein removal are not generally risky procedures, but there is a slight chance of bruising, discoloration and scarring after treatment. Also, the treatment may not prevent new spider veins from developing, so future treatment may be required.
