Scars on the skin result from various types of injuries, including acne, infections, radiation, surgical scars, traumatic scars from dog bites, accidents and burns, to name a few. Once the scar is sufficiently healed, sometimes within 2 weeks, laser therapy begins. Each scar is evaluated individually, and depending on its location, cause, and pre or co- existing medical condition, a treatment plan is created to minimize the appearance and tension of the scar. Laser scar revision is an extension of the trauma care offered by our plastic surgeons to help optimize and modulate your scar to get the best outcome possible.
Typically, treatment time is 2 hours, under local anesthetic. Each scar is unique, and the number of treatments needed is dependent of the severity and location of the scar. Recovery or down time is typically 7-10 days. NOTE; the more aggressive the laser, longer downtime or recovery time will be needed. You will see noticeable results in 3-6 months but full recovery can take up to 2 years. As with all laser treatments, excessive sun exposure should be avoided and sunscreen with an SPF of 50 should be used at all times. Any history of skin disorders, cold sores, keloid or hypertrophic scars are potential contraindications to laser. Any treatment performed with oral anesthetic requires the patient have a ride home (not UBER or taxi).
